MEET DR. MOIN SHAIKH
My early years included a lot of travel. I grew up in India, then finished high school in Nigeria. I then made the move to Texas to attend Baylor University. My medical training was at A.T. Still University in Missouri, and I completed my residency at University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth Texas.
Following my residency, I spent 4 years in academic medicine and had my own panel of patients for several years. I loved the trust and connection both with the patients and the staff. Following a move to Wichita, Kansas for my wife's graduate program, I transitioned to the inpatient setting as a hospitalist at Via Christi Regional Medical Center.
In 2007 she was offered a job in Seattle. At the time, all I knew about Seattle was that it rained a lot and people drank a lot of coffee, and I didn't really favor either. We moved here and I started at Swedish on the Hospital Medicine team. With two young kids, working the graveyard shift was most convenient for our family. In the following years, I navigated many difficult conversations with very sick patients and their families and realized that I loved palliative care. In 2013 I became board certified in palliative care and began splitting my time between hospital medicine and palliative care. Over the years I gradually transitioned into daytime hospital medicine as I missed the continuity and collegiality. And I fell in love with Seattle (but coffee, not so much).
While working at Swedish, I had the opportunity to care for many SMA patients and work with the SMA physicians. After 16 years at Swedish, I am thrilled to be joining SMA where I will be able to work as a primary care physician, and practice preventative medicine in the clinic setting where I can build long-term relationships with patients and their families while navigating complex medical needs and conversations. The trust that SMA has placed in me to care for their patients is humbling. I am very excited for this opportunity to provide excellent care and can't wait to meet my patients!
